Smith: Pre-season preparations well underway

BROMSGORVE Sporting boss Paul Smith has said his pre-season preparations are well underway with a number of meetings already set up to try and bring new players into the squad.

After an eventful season finished on May 7, Smith and his players have been enjoying a weekend breakaway from footballing matters in the popular holiday resort of Benidorm.

Sporting missed out on promotion to the Midland League Premier Division, ending the season nine points behind champions Coventry United as well as losing out in the finals of the Worcestershire Senior Urn and Smedley Crooke Memorial Charity Cup to Alvechurch and Pilkington XXX respectively.

While the players have got a further two weeks off before they return for pre-season, Rouslers boss Smith is already hard at work trying to build his squad for next season.

“It was nice to end the season in Benidorm,” he said. “It gave us a chance to let our hair down after a really long season.

“We’ve come back and my work has already begun. I have already arranged meetings with some players I want to bring into the club but nothing will be set in stone until June when players can sign up.

“There’s also a bunch of pre-season friendlies in the pipeline but we’re just awaiting for confirmation before we announce anything.”

Along with trying to bring players into the club, Smith is pleased to see goalkeeper Chris Jay and forward Sam Wills confirm they’ll be at the club for another season.

Dale Edwards, who suffered a broken ankle at the end of February playing for Redditch & South Warwickshire Combination outfit Black Horse, has also committed his future to the Rouslers for another season.

“It’s brilliant to see Chris announce he’ll be staying with us as he has been tremendous over the last year,” Smith added.

“He’s easily the best keeper the club has ever had any he’s the best keeper I have ever seen in my short managerial career.

“Likewise, Sam has been another tremendous player for us and plays in a variety of positions and hopefully this will start the ball rolling and more and more players will commit to staying with Sporting.

“As for Dale, he’s biting at the bit to get back into action and I’ll be hoping he returns to the squad fully fit in due course as he has been a great player for us.

“I’m really looking to seeing him back in action.”
