PROMISING steeplechaser Declan McManus shone on the national stage as he claimed silver at the English Schools’ Championships.

Just three seconds separated the top three finalists in the u20s 2000metre steeplechase with McManus from Bromsgrove School doing enough to finish second in 5mins 58secs 11.

Droitwich Spa High School pupil James Andrews was also unfortunately not to come away with gold in the 200metres as he came just 0.34secs behind the winner, Cameron Sprague from Bath.

But his personal best time of 22.74secs did land him a place on the podium in second and bag one of the first medals of the weekend at Gateshead.

McManus and Andrews were part of a 35-man Hereford and Worcester County Schools Team. They had to make their way through school, district and county competitions and either obtain the national standard for their discipline or gain the attention of the selectors.
