Nicol lays down victory platform for Avoncroft

ANDY NICOL’S batting and four wickets apiece for Paul Athey and Ian Carpenter provided the foundation as Avoncroft defeated visitors Netherton in Division Three of the Worcestershire League.

Opener Nicol topscored with 73 before Athey and Carpenter claimed four wickets in Avoncroft’s 57-run win.

Netherton won the toss and put Avoncroft into bat. The hosts’ top and middle order all contributed to the scorecard but only Nicol really dominated with the bat, hitting 11 fours in his innings.

David James (26) and Jon Bird (26) kept up racking up the runs but three wickets apiece for Matthew Lowe, Conor Warby and Simon Oseland meant the hosts were dismissed for 202 in the 50th over.

In reply, Netherton’s openers departed cheaply but the third and fourth-wicket partnerships put the visitors firmly back in the contest.

Paul Harris (52), Russell Oseland (32) and Simon Oseland (20) all chipped in but Athey snapped up wicketkeeper Harris and the late order crumbled.

Athey finished with 4-32 from his ten overs while Carpenter ripped through the later batsmen with 4-35.

It was left to Nicol to end the innings with his fourth delivery for a caught and bowled off Kashif Akhtar, leaving Netherton all out on 145.

Avoncroft, who move up to sixth place in the table, will visit Ross on Wye on Saturday.
