BROMSGROVE Ladies A claimed a vital victory against champions and second-placed Stourbridge A to remain top of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire League Womens’ Division One.

In a close encounter, the young Bromsgrove duo of Rachael Mack and Imogen Sinclair clinched two solid straight set wins.

Sally Franks with Jilly Witcomb fought hard but went down in both their contests. However, they clinched the extra set to give Bromsgrove the victory and retain top spot.

Captain Franks said: “Imogen and Rachael put in really strong performances against one of the leading Ladies teams in the county. To win both without dropping a set was fantastic and gave us a great win.”

In Men’s Division One, Bromsgrove bounced back from a poor opening round performance to defeat Barnt Green A 3-1.

Despite the wet conditions, captain Adam Dudek and Steve Halfpenny won both their contests, including a close three-set battle against the Barnt Green first pair. James Griffiths and Luke Pettit opened with a solid win, before being edged out in a close tie break in their final encounter.

County Over-75s veteran Brian Barton was a last-minute call-up to help leaders Bromsgrove E beat second-placed Ombersley B in another top-of-the-table contest in Men’s Division Nine.

Before the match a last-minute injury meant Barton was pulled in from his social game to play for the team. Bruce Turner with Max Feltham continued their fantastic winning streak, only dropping seven games as they cruised to wins in both contests.

It wasn’t such easy going for Barton, playing with captain Chris Hands. However, although they lost both they won the crucial extra set to give Bromsgrove the win.

Captain Hands said: “Losing a player at the last minute is never easy. However, Brian stepped in and put in a great performance to help us to victory and to stay top.”

Playing away at Boughton against their A team, the Ladies C team made it a hat trick of wins for the winter season.

A resounding 4-0 win without dropping a set saw the pairs of Steph Armstrong with Ann Banner and Debbie Oliver with Marie Hackett take undefeated Bromsgrove to the top of Division Four, a great achievement for the newly-promoted team and opening up the possibility of back to back promotions.

It wasn’t such great news for the Ladies E team, who lost away to Droitwich D, or the Ladies G team who had to abandon their Division 10 match against Halesowen C with honours even due to heavy rain.
