Attackers have responded perfectly to heavy criticism, says Barnt Green Spartak boss

GJ SINGH says his Barnt Green Spartak attackers have responded well after they were heavily criticised for their poor display in their FA Vase defeat to Cadbury Athletic earlier this month.

Since that dismal display on September 9 which saw Spartak lose 1-0, they have won their last three games on the bounce in all competitions, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three.

Their latest victory came on Saturday (September 24) when they moved to the summit of the Midland League Division Two table with a 5-3 win over Leamington Hibernians.

Spartak found themselves 2-0 up inside 15 minutes thanks to Benet Parchment and Jacob Snape before Sam Smith and Joseph Wright levelled the scores ten minutes later.

However, Singh’s side showed great character to turn things around in the second half as Parchment netted a further three goals to make it 5-2 before Wright netted a late consolation for the visitors.

Singh said: “We switched off a little when we let the two-goal lead slip but I was quietly confident that if we did the basics right we’d score more goals and we did exactly that.

“What made the result even better was we had square pegs in round holes so if anybody would have offered me 5-3 with a weakened team, I would have snatched their arm off.

“A few of the players after the game said last year we probably would have lost the game after being pegged back so confidence has got something to do with how well we’re performing at the moment.

“After the defeat in the FA Vase I heavily criticised our attackers but they’ve answered those critics well by scoring 16 goals in three games.

“It’s very nice to be sitting at the top of the table instead of propping everybody up like we was last year.”

Spartak are involved in Presidents Cup action on Saturday (October 1) when they travel to Bloxwich Town but will be without Reuel Prescod and the ever-present left back Sukhvir Singh.

They then entertain Hampton in the first round of the Les James Challenge Cup on Wednesday (October 5) night.

Singh added: “Last season when we went to Bloxwich, when they were known as Rostance Edwards, we absolutely dominated them from start to finish but lost 1-0 from a penalty so we feel there’s some unfinished business there.

“Hopefully we can score a few goals and having two cup games means I can give some players the chance to get some minutes under their belts.”
