WORK began on Monday (July 14) to upgrade the changing rooms and washing areas at Catshill Village Meadow.
The current prefabricated ones, which do not even have reliable hot running water, will be demolished and replaced by a new pod-based building.
That will comprise of a modern and comfortable changing area and a toilet suitable for people with disabilities.
There will also be a catering area and storage space.
The majority of funding for the work, led by the Meadow’s Charity, The North West Ward Association (NWWA), comes from Sport England which awarded the scheme a £50,000 grant and £30,000 came from The Veolia Environmental Trust, through the Landfill Communities Fund.
West Mercia Police has also contributed £3,000 and there has been £1,000 from Worcestershire County Council.
Plans for the project were developed after the Parish Plan was drawn up in 2011.
NWWA then conducted surveys with local residents and sports teams which use The Meadow’s facilities and feedback indicated that, although the pitch and car park were excellent, the changing rooms and catering facilities were inadequate and needed replacing.
Chair of the North West Ward Association, Ian Prust, said the improvements would lead to more people in the community using The Meadow.
“They will enable people with physical disabilities to take part in the wide range of events and activities that are held on the meadow. We cannot wait for work to be complete.”
The Veolia Environmental Trust’s executive director Paul Taylor added: “We support community and environmental projects across the UK and it is always great to hear when one is starting.
“The improved facilities will open up opportunities for exercise and socialising for the community of Bromsgrove.
“I look forward to seeing the completed results.”
The project should be completed by July 31.
