Winning wildlife snaps revealed

Bromsgrove Editorial 15th Aug, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

FOUR of the winning photographs in the 2015 Worcestershire Wildlife Trust (WWT) calendar feature scenes snapped in either Bromsgrove or Droitwich.

Twelve pictures were selected from the 250 which were submitted by 50 photographers.

The one used for June, of a fox in Bromsgrove, was taken by Greg Coyne and a magpie photographed at the Upton Warren Nature Reserve is the selected image for July. That was taken by Pete Walkden from South Birmingham.

A shot by Julie Hunt from Droitwich of a swallow in the Spa is on the August page and November’s picture of porcelain fungus at Piper’s Hill and Dodderhill Commons nature reserve was taken by Barbara Hunt.

This year Jason Curtis, who was twice the overall winner of the competition and now runs nature photography workshops with the trust, helped judge this year’s contest.

Wendy Carter, the WWT’s communications manager, said they had been overwhelmed with the standard of entries and added it was more and more difficult to choose the winners each year.

Wendy said: “It just goes to show how important and inspiring our nature, wildlife and environment are to people.

“What’s even more exciting is that lots of the entries were taken in people’s gardens – showing just how important for wildlife these little patches we call our own are.

“We can all do something to help wildlife in our garden from feeding birds to planting nectar-rich plants.

“Even sharing photos online helps to raise the profile and diversity of wildlife in Worcestershire – we’ve got a really active group of photographers who contribute photos of wildlife to our Flickr group.

“And, of course, joining the trust will help us to achieve more for wildlife across our county.”

The 12 winning images feature as full A4 pages in the calendar with runners-up photos featuring alongside the dates.

The front cover image, a pine beauty moth, was voted for by visitors to the WWT website and fans of the trust’s Facebook page. The photograph was taken by Mark Peacock in his Blakedown garden.
