A TRAINEE Bromsgrove firefighter has proved he is a swing above the rest after being handed a prestigious award.

On call firefighter William Doolan, from the town’s combined police and fire station, received the Silver Axe accolade for becoming 2014’s Top Trainee Firefighter.

He was presented with the accolade at Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service’s Annual Medals and Awards Ceremony at Worcester’s Guildhall last Friday (September 5)..

William was chosen for the award for demonstrating exemplary attributes throughout the duration of his training firefighter course.

Station Commander Phil Berry said: “William was the top performing recruit at the training centre and as a result was awarded the coveted Silver Axe award.

“Since he has been with us he has shone in terms of his performance and attitude towards his role as an on call firefighter – he is very enthusiastic and has done very well with his studies.

“He has demonstrated he is going to be a valuable asset to the on call unit.”
