A FORMER TRAIN driver who had recently turned author and published a book about his working life has died.
Pat Wallace wrote ‘Life on the Lickey’ detailing his 43-year career on the railway in Bromsgrove from 1943 to 1986 when he retired.
After being featured in The Standard, demand for the book had left Mr Wallace astounded.
He told the paper recently that he was thrilled to meet so many people when launching the book.
Mr Wallace’s brother David said “Writing the book had been a labour of love for Pat, he had a brilliant mind and Pat said that it was the best thing he had ever done.
Mr Wallace added “Pat’s health had been poor for some time and sadly he died in the Alexandra Hospital last Wednesday (Aug 13) aged 84.
“However, the pleasure from writing the book probably extended his life by another 18 months.”
Mr Wallace went on to say that his brother’s other love was tennis and that Bromsgrove Tennis Club had built ‘Wallace’s Wall’ as a tribute after he had coached the junior’s section for many years.
He said “Pat coached more than 1,000 school children across Bromsgrove, Alvechurch and Astwood Bank, and still coached at Lickey End First School until just last month, as he had said the children there were so well behaved.
Mr Wallace’s funeral will be held at Redditch Crematorium next Friday (August 29) at 12.30pm, followed by a reception at Bromsgrove Rugby Club.
