THOUSANDS of people descended on he town for the ‘Big in the 70s’ themed Bromsgrove Carnival last weekend.
On the main day on Saturday (July 12), the sun-kissed event began with a parade from Artrix to the arena in Sanders Park, which featured several groups including Bromsgrove Library, EPIC Youth, Libby Mae’s Little Angels and Asda.
It was a lively procession, thanks to Blackwell Concert Band which played instrumental versions of a host of 1970s classics, including the Village People’s YMCA and hits from ABBA.
In the park, there was a funfair, along with a host of charity and trade stalls, classic cars from the Bromsgrove MG Owners’ Club, dog shows, HCW Pro Wrestling, food and drink stalls and a live music stage.
There was live music and a funfair in the park the day before, last Friday (July 11), and on Sunday (July 13), there was a novelty fun dog show, the Happy Staffie novelty fun dog show, HCW Pro Wrestling and band Facta 3 taking to the stage, along with the funfair all day and charity and commercial stalls.
Bromsgrove Carnival chairman Ian Perrygrove said: “We estimate around 3,000 to 4,000 people came on the Saturday which was a great turn-out.
“The weather helped and the parade was better than last year, although it will be even better next year when the High Street is not a building site.” he added.
The event raised £6,000 in total and, after costs have been accounted for and a float is put aside to make a start on next year’s event, the Princess of Wales Hospital League of Friends will receive £2,000.
The carnival, organised by a non-profit committee, is aimed at providing free entertainment for the people of Bromsgrove and raising cash for good causes.
Ian added: “We will be looking for more volunteers from Bromsgrove for next year’s event because, like we always say, it’s not our carnival, it’s yours, so if you can help, please get in touch.”
