A MOVEMENT aimed at brightening up Rubery village with flowers which is now in its fourth year has received a prestigious accolade.

Rubery in Bloom, which has just entered its fifth year, has been awarded Level 5 from the Royal Horticultural Society.

The project was launched four years ago, starting off with Rednal Hill Lane, and the Beacon side of the village.

Since then, it has gradually been extended across the area and there are now more than 130 planters and boxes throughout the village.

Chairman Stan Hawkesford said: “The group is pleased with their achievements and what they have done for Rubery over the last four years.

“We are looking forward to keeping up the good work and continuing to make Rubery a better place to live and shop in.

“We had a five year plan and we will have achieved everything we will have wanted to by next summer.”

Mr Hawkesford said there would naturally be other areas which residents may feel could be improved by the Rubery in Bloom scheme.

And he urged anyone who had any suggestions or anyone else who wanted to be involved in the project to call him on 0121 453 9675.
