Romsley School marks centenary

A HOST of celebrations have been organised to mark the centenary of a Romsley school.

St Kenelm’s Primary was opened on April 12, 1915, and this year the classes of 2015 have been learning about the school’s history.

Among the subjects which have been on the timetable have been the Second World War – complete with sand-bagged air raid shelter, school uniforms and fashions over the last 100 years and much more.

Then last Thursday (April 16), a time capsule was buried in the school grounds.

A number of guests attended the special ceremony including the current headteacher Suzanne Shackleton who was joined by the three previous holders of the role – Jane Woakes, Hazel Gommersall and Maureen Burns.

The chair of governors, three Worcestershire County officials, members of the parent association and staff were also there for the memorable occasion.

Among them were deputy head Denise Finnie who retires this year after giving a quarter of a century to St Kenelm’s.

The time capsule was buried by pupils who are part of the school council and a special centenary lunch was held. That was followed by the classic dessert of chocolate concrete and pink custard.

Children’s families were invited into school to join in prayer and pupils presented their work for those who went along.

Each year group performed songs and dances from a different decade of the last century and an exhibition of the children’s centenary work was also put on display for parents to view.

Youngsters at the school also each got a slice of a giant ‘100’ celebration cake which was baked and iced by one of the parents.
