WARM-hearted residents of Bromsgrove are being encouraged to donate essential items to help people in the Calais refugee camp, nicknamed ‘The Jungle’.

Volunteers from the Bromsgrove and Redditch Welcome Refugees Committee are calling on people to help make sure some of the most vulnerable people have the basic items to stay warm, clean and fed.

The monthly ‘Calais Collections’ in Redditch has already seen two van-loads of clothes, toiletries and camping gear make their way to the shores of France via Worcestershire charity ‘People In Motion.

This month’s collection day is Saturday (August 27), with collection points at the Central Mosque (Jinnah Rd) and The Bridge Church (Evesham Road) open between 2pm and 5pm.

Volunteer Alistair Waugh said: “We’re keen to play our part in providing basic items for refugees in Calais. And we need your help.”

Items on the list include camping gear such as gas stoves, sleeping bags and blankets; toiletries; and men’s, women’s and children’s underwear.

The group have set a target of £3000 to raise enough money for ‘dignity packs’ and require 150 supporters to donate £20 each.

All details and a full list of suggested items for donation are available at www.brwr.uk or on the Bromsgrove and Redditch Welcome Refugees Facebook page.
