A REDNAL church has created this eye-catching commemorative piece of art on the grass outside its building as a way for the community to remember those who fought in the First World War.
The design, outside St Stephen’s Church in Edgewood Road, was the brainchild of former serving soldier Norman Mills who enlisted the help of another ex-armed forces member, artist Rob Smith. He helped make Norman’s idea a reality by created the stencils for the dates and the poppies. The area was then sprayed with special grass-friendly paint.
And, on Monday night (August 4) between 10pm and 11pm, a candle was lit in the vestibule which was visible through the glass windows of the church.
St Stephen’s Church secretary Wendy Cooper said: “We are so proud of it because it is outside the church and that meant it could be seen by everyone and at any time of day.
“We have had a lot of people stop and view it, as well as take photographs of it.
“All the children from the play group were showed it and told about the First World War.
“The reaction we have had from the whole community has been very good indeed.”
