Police stop 486 speeders on motorway

SPEEDING motorists in Worcestershire were targeted as part of a police operation which recorded hundreds of drivers going over the speed limit.

The crackdown, which was carried out by the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG), saw 486 drivers stopped across the West Midlands’ motorway network between April 13 and April 17.

A total of 67 motorists were caught travelling at more than 100 mph, with the highest speed recorded on the M6 Toll where one driver was found going at 125mph.

The majority of speeding offences – around 68 per cent – were committed by drivers travelling between 90 and 100mph.

The operation, which targeted drivers on the M5 southbound, M6 Toll and the M6 motorways, comes after an online survey of the motoring public where more than 700 people said they thought speeding was a real issue.

Officers concentrated their efforts on 16 April when they took part in a 24 hour ‘speed marathon’, catching 110 speeding drivers in the Midlands in one day.

Ch Insp Jared White from CMPG said he hoped the operation sent a clear message to drivers to consider people’s safety.

“The vast majority of those caught speeding were travelling in excess of 90mph.” he said.

“Speed is a significant factor in many serious and fatal collisions on our roads and I cannot stress how dangerous it is to drive at these speeds, not only to the driver but also to other road users.

“All of the 486 drivers caught will have been sent a notice of intended prosecution. Those driving at excessive high speed will appear before the courts.”

David Jamieson, Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, added: “Speed is a well-known killer on our roads. I welcome this crackdown, especially on the 67 offenders who were caught speeding at over 100mph.

“Reducing the number of deaths on our roads is a key target of my policing plan. I am pleased that the force is taking this commitment seriously and improving safety on our roads.”
