Made in Longbridge - town's motors make it onto the quirky car list

A BIRMINGHAM-based car company has named its most unusual and interesting vehicles it has sold over the years to celebrate its 70th anniversary – and two of the top ten were built in Longbridge.

BCA Birmingham marks its marvellous milestone this year and in their top ten more quirky cars include Lady Diana’s Austin Metro and the first MGF.

Lady Diana’s ‘W’ reg Austin Metro was estimated to be worth £1,200 in the early 1990s when the sale took place. But, because the then Lady Diana Spencer was first linked with Prince Charles at that time resulted in the car selling for more than five times its value.

The first MGF was auctioned by BCA in a special sale on behalf of Rover in 1996 and interest was so high in the newly-launched model that the 30 examples sold averaged more as used cars than they had cost new. On average each made seven per cent on its new list price.

Gemma Cartwright MBE, from the Pride Of Longbridge, said: “It is fantastic news that two cars built in Longbridge have made the top ten. So many great cars have been made there over the years and it is important to keep that heritage alive.

“At the POL rally we see so many wonderful cars where the enthusiasts have invested time and money to preserve them.

“I’m sure a variety of POL cars would fetch more than their original price tag.”
