RESIDENTS in a three-storey block of flats in Bromsgrove had a lucky escape after an arson attack.

The incident happened around 7pm on March 23 when a wheelie bin in a bin cupboard in Lime Grove was set alight.

The bin store was destroyed, causing damage to a covered walkway.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “The fire had potential to be far more serious, but the fire service was able to gain control of the fire before it spread to the flats.”

She added it was believed the fire was started deliberately.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said two crews – one from Bromsgrove and one from Redditch – were sent to the scene and put out the fire, using a hoses.

Two firefighters also used breathing aparatus as they battled the blaze and crews also had to work hard to make sure the fire did not spread to nearby properties.

The area was made safe at 8.35pm.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
