Kind-hearted Bromsgrove group mark MS Awareness Week

A KIND-HEARTED group will mark Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Week in style after appearing in an educational film documenting why exercise is so important for people suffering with MS.

The group was organised by the Community Neuro Team, at the Princess of Wales Community Hospital in Bromsgrove after members asked patients if a regular weekly exercise class was organised, would they attend.

The resounding response was a definite ‘yes’ and the Windmill Exercise Group was born.

Sessions have since been running for eight years and the group, which includes wheelchair uses, runs every Tuesday lunchtime from the town’s Windmill Centre in Hunt End.

Members are able to not only work on their exercises but can meet other people from across Redditch and Bromsgrove who also suffer with MS.

The group is organised by the MS Society alongside Redditch Sports Development team and sees physios and two fitness instructors work with members to complete a range of simple exercises.

Members are usually led through seated exercises by main instructor Bob Schofield, of Redditch and Bromsgrove Sports Development, before moving on to a circuit which is designed to help with co-ordination and strength.

The classes finishes each session with Tai Chai or other similar slow movements.

And now the Windmill members are the stars of their very own film, which was produced in a collaboration by group member Lubna S Haq and filmmaker, Khurrum M Sultan.

The group hope to raise £500 from the initiative which documents how regular exercise can help with stability and to improve balance and mobility.

Stretching and moving also helps to strengthen muscles in the arms and legs which can also help to reduce spasms.

Lubna and the rest of the group hope to raise as much money as possible during MS Awareness Week (April 25 to May 1), right up to MS World Day on May 27.
