MEMBERS and friends of the Housman Society successfully completed an 80-mile sponsored walk for Book Aid last week.
Cheered on by Chairman Jim Page brave walkers set off from Bromsgrove for a nine-day trek down to London to follow the famous footsteps of Laurence Housman in 1903.
Though Laurence never achieved the fame of his older brother, poet AE Housman, he was an artist and writer who dedicated his time and talents to the votes for women cause.
Members of the society felt Book Aid was an appropriate cause for them to support with the anniversary walk as they thought it would have been a charity which would have appealed to Laurence himself.
The money raised will go towards creating children’s corners in public libraries in sub-Saharan Africa – so far the group, which arrived in London on Saturday (July 19), has raised £850 but is are hoping to reach £5,000.
Organiser Jill Liddington, who walked the whole way, said: “The nine-day experience was wonderful – brilliant heat-wave sunshine, exquisite countryside and shady riverbank paths, plus the good company of the dozen walkers who joined me.
“We feel this is a charity Laurence as a writer and also an internationalist would have had close to his heart.”
