Heavy rain and thunderstorm weather warning issued for Worcestershire

Bromsgrove Editorial 6th Jun, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

THE MET OFFICE has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms across Worcestershire this weekend.

According to tomorrow’s forecast, there will be rain from 1am to 4am and then again from 6am to 4pm. Currently, it is predicted that the heaviest showers will fall between 9am and 2pm.

It is feared that areas prone to flooding could be heavily hit and drivers are warned to take extra care while they are out and about on the roads.

When approaching flooded roads, people should be careful when driving or walking through as it will not be clear how deep it is.

If proceeding, motorists should drive slowly through standing water, allow oncoming traffic to pass and test their brakes afterwards.

Headlights should be used in heavy rain to improve visibility and drivers should also allow longer stopping distances between themselves and the cars in front of them.

Anyone who breaks down should try to get their car to a safe and visible place and call for roadside assistance.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service Station Commander Alan Haley from HWFRS said: “It’s a good idea to have a list of useful phone numbers ready in case of flooding and to keep it somewhere safe.

“If your home does begin to flood, turn off your electricity supply, and do not touch any sources of electricity such as switches or appliances when you are standing in flood water. Do help any elderly family members or neighbours to prepare as well.”

Extra teams of staff from Worcestershire County Council who clear gullies and drains are on standby to help where needed.

Worcestershire County Councillor John Smith OBE, the Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways said: “We would urge all motorists and residents to take care when walking or driving through water sodden or flooded roads and pathways.

“Worcestershire County Council has extra teams on standby to ensure that disruption to both residents and motorists is kept to a minimum. The weather is expected to be intermittent over the weekend and into Monday and as such residents and motorists should prepare appropriately.”
