Handgun seized and arrests made in connection with Northfield burglaries

POLICE officers chasing down burglary suspects in Northfield have arrested five men and seized a firearm.

The group, who were in an MG Rover, were seen acting suspiciously around a Ford Mondeo in Bartley Drive at around 3pm last Friday (August 22).

As they were approached by officers, they ran away.

After being chased through gardens and streets, they were stopped by police on Cromwell Lane and checks revealed the Ford Mondeo had been stolen from a burglary on Maas Road six days earlier – on August 16.

Two men, aged 27 and 21, and two teenagers, aged 18 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A 24-year-old man was arrested from the MG Rover on suspicion of burglary and following a search of the vehicle a handgun and ammunition were found.

All five have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Supt Paul Minor, the local policing manager for Birmingham South, said: “We take gun crime very seriously and the seizure of a handgun means one more gun is off the streets of Birmingham.

“The car has been seized and will now be forensically examined by specialist officers.

“Our investigations now continue and we would like to reassure the local community that our fight against serious crime continues.”

Any witnesses or anyone with any information should call West Midlands Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
