Flood grant for Rubery residents

MORE than £53,000 will be spent on relieving Rubery residents whose homes have repeatedly been ruined by flood waters.

The cash will be used to develop the shrub area in Brook Road Park, helping to bring relief to property owners in Callowbrook Lane who have been suffered from flooding issues for the last 15 years.

The funds have been secured by North Worcestershire Water Management from Trent Regional Flood and Coastal Committee.

So far £21,000 has already been spent on undertaking detailed surveying and modelling of the Callow Brook catchment.

The remaining £33,000 will go towards building the flood defences so when there are heavy down falls the water will be held back, stopping houses further downstream from being flooded.

Equal contributions have been made by Bromsgrove District Council and Worcestershire County Council.

Letters will be going out to residents in Callowbrook Lane and those who live near the park with information about the scheme.

A full consultation will also be launched before any developments start.

Rubery councillor Peter McDonald said: “This has come as a great relief to property owners in Callowbrook Lane who over the past few years have had to leave their homes on more than one occasion for up to, in some cases, 12 months.

“It was very upsetting for local residents when an application for funding was refused some months ago to develop some of Brook Road Park into a balancing pond to form a flood defence for properties in Callowbrook Lane.

Coun John Smith, who is responsible for Highways, said: “This is really good news for all those people who have had to leave their homes due to flooding.

“It is also a great outcome for North Worcestershire Water and Bromsgrove District Council.

“The county council is very pleased to be working with them to ensure this project can go ahead.”
