FIRE INVESTIGATORS are at the Saxon Business Park this morning after the massive blaze which fire chiefs have now revealed began in a large wax recycling plant.

Firefighters were faced with significant dangers including the potential of the flames spreading to adjacent units, gas cylinders on the site and a running fuel fire.

Several workers from nearby units were evacuated and, miraculously, no one was injured in the incident.

More than 15 engines were sent to the devastating scene as 70 firefighters battled the blaze from just after 7pm with numerous water jets and specialist compressed foam.

Among them were two crews each from Bromsgrove and Worcester, three from Redditch and Droitwich, one each from Kidderminster, Upton-on-Severn, Pebworth, Pershore and Ross-on-Wye and water carriers from Evesham and Leominster. There was also a commanding support unit from Malvern, an aerial ladder platform from Worcester, high ranking fire officers and the Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

Police and ambulance crews were also in attendance.

The smoke could be seen for miles around and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, which received 45 calls from worried residents, also warned people living nearby to keep all their doors and windows shut – that decision was taken after consultation with Public Health England.

The fire was eventually brought under control, five hours later at 1am when one engine remained to damp down the area.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “In spite of difficult conditions and an extremely intense fire, crews worked hard and managed to contain the fire to the recycling plant and prevent significant damage to surrounding businesses.

“Fire crews will remain on site, working with colleagues from the police, ambulance, Environment Agency and Public Health England, to resolve the incident.”

Area Commander Keith Chance, who was the incident commander, said: “Due to the swift and professional actions of fire crews, working in a very hazardous environment, we have been able to prevent the fire from destroying surrounding businesses and ensure nobody was hurt.”

The cause of the fire is as yet unknown and fire investigation is on-going.
