Canal trip treat for young carers

TWO groups of seven young carers from Worcestershire were given a special treat at Tardebigge Wharf last Thursday (July 17) to reward them for the hard work they do.

They were given a trip along the Worcester to Birmingham Canal on the long day boat Emma, thanks to a link up between Bromsgrove Lions Club and Anglo Welsh Waterways Holidays.

While the one group went out on the boat, the other participated in other activities on the wharf and then after a picnic lunch, which was provided by Morrisons in Rubery, the groups swapped over and did the other activity.

Lion Keith Godwin said: “When we were given the opportunity to take Emma for a day trip, we immediately thought of the young carers in our area as they are such a deserving group and we were delighted to be able to offer them the day as a special treat.

“And, thanks to Anglo Welsh and its staff at Tardebigge Wharf, the young carers enjoyed a great break from their usual routine – a fantastic time was had by all.”

Matt Anderson, the manager of the Anglo Welsh Tardebigge base, said: “Canals are wonderfully relaxing places to visit.

“Travelling at just 4mph, it was definitely the fastest way for them to slow down and take a break from all the amazing hard work they do for their families.”

Mary Lewis, Worcestershire Young Carers’ leader team manager, said: “We work with young carers from as young as seven up to 25 years-old, who carry out a broad range of caring roles for their loved ones.

“These are children and young people with a lot of responsibilities on young shoulders, so the canal boat trip was a splendid opportunity for them to relax and enjoy an activity that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.”

She concluded by thanking all those involved for putting on the event.
