Bromsgrove youngsters re-enact 1914 Christmas match

PUPILS from schools across Bromsgrove have been re-enacting the famous football match played as part of the Christmas Truce in the First World War.

Youngsters from Bromsgrove Preparatory School’s year eight and North Bromsgrove High School contested the game on Thursday (December 4) to mark the occasion which took place between British and German troops on Christmas Day in 1914.

The Last Post was played before the match began by Sophie Meadows, who is in year five at Bromsgrove Preparatory School.

A spokesperson for Bromsgrove School said: “It was a truly fitting commemoration for the centenary of the 1914 match.”




Young people from North Bromsgrove High School held a variety of other events to commemorate the First World War.

As well as truce football matches, there was also ‘trench’ style warfare re-enactments and poetry writing where students produced some outstanding work and showed a real depth of empathy and understanding.


A spokesperson said: “It was a fantastic day with a very serious message.”
