SISTERS were doing it for themselves in Bromsgrove when a special DIY event for women was held.

More than 50 went to the DIY ladies’ night at Broad Street DIY with the first 30 through the doors earning a free goody bag.

Tony Warren, who launched the company in 1979, officially opened the event with a short speech, welcoming everyone and paying tribute to the three generations of his family who now work at the shop.

Star of TV DIY shows Huntley Thawe gave a presentation, enlightening the women on the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of home improvement.

And, as well as browsing the store and enjoying complimentary refreshments supplied by local businesses, there were five live demonstrations. They included changing a tap washer, drilling holes in brickwork, putting fixings into plasterboard and silicone and painting – the latter two were done by Darren Waldron of Waldron Decorators.

Members of staff, Huntley and local handyman, Handy Andy, answered questions about specific jobs, representatives from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service provided fire safety advice and guests could talk to Peter Aston, a local crime prevention advisor.

Everyone attending was into a free prize draw with the opportunity to buy additional tickets. That raised £50 for Libby Mae’s Little Angels.

Jo Reynolds from Stoke Heath said it was a fabulous night with plenty of things to see, do and learn.

“I bought a toilet seat which I’m going to try to fit myself.

“I also purchased a drill and following some helpful advice I’m going to put some shelves up too.”

Director Lisa Childs said she was amazed by how many women went along, adding a second similar event scheduled for the autumn already had a waiting list.

“People can save so much money by doing their own home improvements but it’s important they know about the correct use of tools and the right materials for a job.”

Those wanting to go to the autumn event can contact Broad Street DIY in-store, e-mail [email protected] or call 01527 873555 and they will be notified when a date has been chosen.
