A BROMSGROVE man is hoping to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Midlands rockers Slade and Wizzard by charting a successful Christmas single – and it is all for charity.

Phil Haynes, who organises the annual Day of Kindness, has written Its Christmas in Our Town and has enlisted the help of Niven Smith to be the other half of Vintage 12 and produce it, along with other residents to record it and make a video.

A percentage of the proceeds from each download will go to town charity Libby Mae’s Little Angels.

Phil told The Standard: “It has all of the non-religious, simple, fun feel of the 70s Christmas songs from Slade and Wizzard – who are also from the Midlands.

“I have tried to make the video feel the same.”

Award-winning Catshill chef Lorenzo Richards, who runs the Wildmoor Oak, has put on the red suit to be Father Christmas in the video which has been filmed in the town over the last week, including the High Street and at Hoiti Toyti. It is being directed by Conner Bingham. He is a former NEW College student and now film-maker.

In the music movie, Father Christmas is chased by a mistletoe-holding Santa fan.

“It has had a great response from musicians and people in general.

“Trevor T really likes it and plans to do a version himself,” added Phil.

Libby Mae’s Little Angels was launched by Charlotte and Richard Sharratt in memory of their daughter Libby Mae who sadly passed away at Birmingham Children’s Hospital last year at just two weeks old.

The charity has already raised £100,000 for neo-natal units across the Midlands.

Charlotte said: “We first met Phil last year through the Day of Kindness that he organised in Bromsgrove which we attended again this year.

“We were contacted by Phil and he told us he had written a Christmas song which he would be releasing and asked if we would be happy for him to support our charity by donating a small percentage of profits from download sales to us.

“We were delighted another fellow Bromsgrovian wanted to support us and of course obliged.

“The song is fun and we hope it’s a huge success.”

Its Christmas in Our Town is due to be released on Monday (December 1) on on Songcast, iTunes, Amazon and other prominent sites.
