Heart-warming silent lighthouse keeper comedy also had its poignant moments

THIS performance offered a kind of show you do not see very often and was a welcome break from the usual family productions you see at theatres up and down the country.

The silent piece by the WinterWalker theatre group centred around three lighthouse keepers as they went about what must have been a rather monotonous job.

That said, this show was far from tedious and, if anything, showed how those doing the thankless task of staying up all night to ensure ships didn’t hit the rocks, may have injected a bit of excitement into their lives as lighthouse keepers.

The small crowd was delighted by the cleverly choreographed interactions and dances between the trio, complete with acrobatics, as they went through their routines of testing the lights, checking the fog horn, making endless cups of tea and, most importantly, ensuring they never ran out of biscuits.

It began with a new arrival starting to learn the ropes of his new job and the audience went with young ‘Arry on his journey to him to the proud moment where he earned his prestigious lighthouse keeper’s cap.

But this show was more than it first seemed and was not just comedy.

It was also thought-provoking theatre and there was a real poignant moment of pathos towards the end of this heart-warming tale of three lovable lighthouse keepers.
