6 on Broad Street - Brum's newest nightclub has six appeal

WITH the number of nightclubs and bars in Birmingham City Centre, especially on Broad Street, if you are opening a new one you need to offer revellers something different – something the others don’t offer – 6 on Broad Street does exactly that.

Following a £1million investment and with six different rooms to choose from (hence the name) it is a venue that will have something to satisfy the tastes of everyone in your group when you head there for a night out.

The downstairs bar – The Old Turn Junction – opens from 5pm and serves a good selection of meals until 9pm. With a nice relaxing feel, it provides the perfect place to meet up with friends for a good catch-up, along with music from DJs and live acts.

One of the highlights during the official opening on Thursday (September 10) was a talented acoustic act who belted out rock and indie classics which had those there singing along. The music was also not too loud – as you find with other venues – so if you sit a bit away from the stage, the entertainment can be used as background music as you chat away to your heart’s content.

For indie and rock fans, there is the Downloads room which is not too over the top in the decor department. Pictures of The Beatles, the Ramones, Nirvana and other favourites adorn the bar, but that is as far as it goes and needs to go – when you go in there, you know what you’re getting.

One room guaranteed to be a firm favourite will be the ‘Delicious’ pop-tastic paradise. With neon walls and neon squared dancefloors to provide the backdrop for the cheesy tunes, you cannot help but move your feet and have a dance in here.

Equally as impressive as the room itself is the neon stripped tunnel which takes you there.

We’ve all seen those beach bars on sun-kissed islands in the movies or in travel brochures (although you don’t usually expect to see them in Birmingham). The Cabana bar provides that cylindrical hut style area where you can chill out and enjoy rum cocktails or smoothies. The designers, when planning 6 on Broad Street, cleverly developed a previously unused area (or some would say wasted space) for this great little place which can be hired out for special occasions by large groups or, alternatively, there are six individual booths perfect for smaller parties.

In fact, a few of the rooms in 6 on Broad Street have booths which could be easily roped off for those revellers fancying a bit of VIP treatment.

When it comes to creating a new venue, if there is something from the previous one that is a winning formula, why change it? Fans of Jongleurs will be pleased to hear that room has remained, offering stand-up comedy on Friday and Saturday nights and some Sundays. Big screens and TVs have been added so those with any obscured views can still watch the acts and, at around 10.30pm when the humour is over, but the laughs are still lingering, it transforms into a hub for hundreds to enjoy dance and party anthems.

The ‘and finally’ on news bulletins is always that quirky story that everyone waits for and it is the same with this brand new and bright Brum venue – 6 on Broad Street has a secret ‘Suds ‘n’ Duds’ speakeasy room (providing you can find out how to get in there).

With a table on a bath tub where the lid opens to provide an ice bucket for your beers, a seat on a toilet, a Chesterfield sofa with denim cushions and horse saddle seats, this room is quirkiness personified and really has to be seen to be believed. The look of amazement on people’s faces as they explored the stand-alone, self-contained speakeasy was a picture.

Gas Street is a good place to look for the secret entrance and the name ‘Suds ‘n’ Duds’ is a fair enough clue to help you locate it.

The range of rooms and music genres played within them is impressive enough, but so too is the variety of drinks on offer – you have the usual beers and ciders on draught and in bottles, but you also get a selection of cocktails and (for those driving or those who don’t drink) mocktails, ensuring there is something for everyone.

Food – served in The Old Turn Junction and the speakeasy – includes some cracking classics, but with their own 6 on Broad Street twists.

Among them are small plates, shared platters, hot dogs, nachos and a range of beef and chicken burgers, including the Six Burger which, with cheese and bacon, as well as the beef, will simply have you salivating.

Manager Mark Pook, who has 25 years experience and has ran some of the biggest clubs across the country, said: “6 on Broad Street is one of the most exciting entertainment ventures to be working with.

“The mix of music, comedy and cocktails throughout the venue ensures we have a little something for everybody to enjoy on their nights out.

“The previous venue had six different rooms – 6 on Broad Street offers six different venues – all under one roof.”

It has been a busy first week for Brum’s newest nightclub and with TOWIE and I’m a Celebrity star Mark Wright due there tonight (Friday) there are plenty of good times ahead planned for 6 on Broad Street.
